Artwork by Straker for Foot locker AU comptetion

my friend from back home entered this competition, this is his entry!

made from spray paint.

My goal for this painting was to create a feeling of travel and adventure. The Nike 'Swoosh' has morphed into a canoe sailed by strange beings from lands far away. They are on the verge of disembarking on a treasure island and are assisted by a variety of creatures both great and small. A pelican grabs the shoelace to help bring the sneaker vessel to shore while whales create bursts of water to welcome their new visitors. To give the work some Australian elements I added small details like the Sydney Opera House and the Southern Cross.

The sneaker itself inspired the artwork and I aimed to have the design flow with the different sections which form to make up the shoe, for example the squiggly serpent beneath the laces or the octopus whose tentacles run even with the stitching on the back end of the shoe.

This most challenging aspect for this painting was creating the level of detail I desire through strict use of spray paints. no brushes, stencils or markers. To give the work some texture I added dirt from my doormat that my sneakers had picked up along the way and mixed it into the primer.
