Nike Lunarcharge – homage to a legendary Nike classic
The Nike Air Max 90, the Nike Air Presto and even the Nike Air Current all have one thing in common: they are classic Nike models that have attained cult status and, along with many other models, they symbolise the mythology behind the Nike brand. This means that the latest Nike Lunarcharge model in our shop is a tribute to a whole range of iconic models made by Nike’s celebrated designers. The latest creation from the much-loved sportswear manufacturer from Beaverton (Oregon) combines several well-known Nike features, both visually and functionally, in one and the same shoe. The result is a unique model that became an object of desire as soon as it was put on sale. That’s not in the least surprising, because the Nike Lunarcharge really has everything that defines a true sneaker success.
Characterised by a combination of iconic Nike features
The designers have managed to combine some very diverse features from various Nike models into a new symbiosis that exudes charm and flair for any occasion. The Air Flow Neoprene upper material and the visually attractive sole emblazoned with an integrated Nike logo alone could be described as impressive highlights. There’s no doubt about it: if you are a Nike connoisseur, then you will have no trouble recognising some familiar features in this comfortable Lunar sole. It’s a typical Nike sole that has been completely reworked for the Nike Lunar Charge – and the American sportswear manufacturers have also ensured that the design comes with a subtle version of the familiar sock-like Neoprene upper shape that was such a big part of the Nike product line in the 1990s. You will also recognise features from the Nike Air Max 90, the Air Flow and the Air Current, for example. Together, they make the Nike Lunarcharge a perfect, sporty shoe for everyday wear.
From the very beginning, innovative concepts have been the order of the day
It’s quite clear that Nike has not changed its commitment to innovative concepts with this new shoe. The company is a global leader in sporting and now also fashion brands, and this status is the outcome of its constant endeavour to supply innovative features along with excellent workmanship and classic designs. It is no coincidence that Nike can look back on almost 50 years of success in making sports shoes and sportswear. But the company came by its memorable brand name through a rather circuitous route. The original founders of the company back in 1964 planned to distribute shoes made by Onitsuka Tiger under the Blue Ribbons Sport name. But the two founders of the company - middle distance runner Phil Knight and successful coach Bill Powerman – were ambitious for more. As part of a university project they expanded this little company so that it could begin to sell its own products from the early 1970s onwards.
An obvious link with the Nike Runner tradition of the 1990s and 2000s
The company at that time had a starting capital of just 1,200 dollars. But even the choice of name – as we now know today – turned out to be a massive hit. The two founders of Nike named the company after the Greek goddess of victory and this marked the start of a successful journey that took the company from small beginnings to the height of sporting success. Nike has always intended its products and sports equipment to provide each individual athlete with the best possible products to help them on their way towards top level sporting achievements. At the same time, Nike has been a popular influence on modern urban culture. In hip-hop, casual sport, as well as in streetwear, Nike has been an inspirational force for several decades. From the 1990s onwards there has been a huge fan base behind Nike’s legendary Runner shoes.
Nike Lunar Charge: a sneaker hybrid – with the best of everything
These very same features that made the Runner models so popular in previous years are now catapulting the new Nike Lunarcharge to the top of the popularity stakes. The designers have used Neoprene from the 1988 Nike Air Flow, the form or outline of the Nike Air Current and the striking eye-stays of the Air Max 90. The thick, padded outer sole is a dominant feature and the inside has a slatted structure borrowed from the Lunar Epic. The heel area is also very well proportioned, or in other words generously padded, incorporating something that was previously a key design eature of the Air Presto. And the Nike Air Max with its staggered eyelets has also left its mark on the Nike Lunar Charge design. The feature that will immediately catch your eye, however, is the large Nike logo that is visible on the side of the thick sole. This, more than anything else, is what gives this sneaker hybrid its unique appearance.
